hello, my nearest and dearest. welcome to “new shit”, a music plog* (podcast and blog) about new music in my life… whatever that means.
note that this doesn’t necessarily mean “new” new… i’m dreadfully out of step when it comes to new releases, so i don’t even try anymore. but just shit that’s…… new to me. things that have caught my ear while i’m out grabbing dinner, in a bookstore, at home in le office… wherever.
there will be actual audio here someday… but i’m not allowing myself to find reasons to put shit off indefinitely anymore. so you get text. substitute whatever you think my voice sounds like.

people bemoan the death of the music video – have bemoaned it for at least a decade or two – and when you see NLE Choppa* damn near crawl out of his skin to act the entire fool, you get what we kinda miss. am i only going to get this awesome weirdness at a show? not fair. but anyways, here we get a house thumper punctuated by choppa’s hilarious, “this dude’s an entire fool” delivery. choppa is having all the fun at the top right now, and good for him.

and speaking of having all the fun at the top, could anyone possibly deny that 2024 was the year kendrick… kendrick’d? even todd in the shadows had to put aside any reservations on an admittedly harsh hip-hop beef and just give the man his roses for posterizing drake in the harshest of fashions. SZA, having an amazing few years herself, provides her reliably shimmering vocals to her artistic bestie.

i dunno… she’s such a breath of fresh “WHERE THE HELL WAS I?” she effortlessly outrhymes your favorite, she’s a damn ball of charisma, but most of all… MOST of all? there ain’t a damn thing she takes seriously. her latest video finding a sitcomy way to handle what was, by her own description, one of the lowest points in her life.
that it’s an entire fucking bop is not too big a surprise. it’s what she does.
