has it been a decade? is the question. is something that’s been on my mind for quite a while lately.
i’ve been an official “as an adult” resident of brooklyn since 2016, but i’ve been doing stuff out here as that same “adult” since… well, since. i even remember how when moving into my first apartment in queens back in 2008 – seeing my family off that day and thanking them for the help – that night i went down to a party somewhere around the 2/3 president street stop.
which is in brooklyn, is the point.
one thing that’s always been a constant in my brooklyning since… maybe 2014 or so, has been the bazaar at dance africa.
which as the ad copy goes, goes thusly:
“DanceAfrica’s beloved bazaar returns, featuring more than 150 vendors from around the world, offering African, Caribbean, and African-American food, crafts, and fashion. Celebrate the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Africa and its diaspora, and see the streets surrounding BAM transformed into a global marketplace.”
which, hey, works for me. as far as descriptions go.
but this has always just kinda been dance africa for me: the bazaar itself. as someone who felt a little bit of the photography buzz – enough to think of pursuing it as a pro-hobby or whatever – this was an absolute jackpot of things to get on camera.
